The TITANIC Expedition Continues!

From May 30 – June 9, 2004, Dr. Robert Ballard and his scientific team returned to the wreck of the RMS Titanic.

From May 30 – June 9, 2004, Dr. Robert Ballard and his scientific team returned to the wreck of the RMS Titanic, 12,500 feet beneath the surface of the North Atlantic Sea. The team used remote operated vehicles (ROVs) to produce an updated site map and collect thousands of detailed photographs. These images will form a “photo mosaic” to help researchers investigate how Titanic has changed in the 20 years since its discovery.

You Can Still Be a Part of this Historic Event!

Even though the fieldwork is over, the work of studying what the team found has only just begun. You can still follow the expedition on Dr. Ballard’s gated website with your user name and password. (If you do not have a user name or password, call Pier Wisconsin at 414-276-7700.) Chat with researchers in engineering, marine biology, forensic science and deep-water archaeology. Follow the research as it unfolds and try your hand at contributing sections to the ongoing expedition web site.

Another Titanic Overnight Planned!

Upset that you missed the first Titanic Live! Overnight Event? Don’t worry … you have another chance! Students interested in spending the night at Discovery World learning about the RMS Titanic and other shipwrecks can sign up for another overnight experience from 7:00 p.m. August 21st to 10:00 am August 22nd. Learners of All Ages Gather for Titanic Live! June 4 – 9, 2004

The Titanic Expedition began with a live event that used satellite technology to link people from around the country with Dr. Ballard’s research team aboard the Ronald H. Brown. Here in Milwaukee, in Discovery World’s Gammex Theater, hundreds of students and learners of all ages had the chance to interact with Dr. Ballard and his team four times a day from June 4th through the 9th. Students also participated in an overnight experience at Discovery World June 5th – 6th to get hands-on with forensic science and underwater archaeology techniques used to explore the Titanic and other shipwrecks.

What Can We Learn From a Shipwreck?

Today, more than 90 years since she collided with an iceberg during her maiden voyage, the RMS Titanic is still making headlines. Immediately after the disaster, new maritime safety and travel regulations changed the way we use waterways around the world. And now, as a protected underwater museum, the Titanic is helping scientists measure ecological changes and human impact on the world’s oceans.
